The wildlife of Bitterwasser: our animals

Bitterwasser is not only a paradise for glider pilots. The area is also home to an impressive variety of animals.

Bitterwasser Gliding Lodge is not only known for its perfect conditions for glider pilots, but is also a hotspot for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts. Surrounded by the vastness of Namibia, the area offers an impressive animal world, which you can discover on a game drive or even from a bird's eye view in a glider. Here you will find an overview of the animal inhabitants of Bitterwasser:

**Zebras**

Zebras are known for their distinctive striped pattern that makes each animal unique. These graceful animals can often be seen in groups in the open spaces around Bitterwasser. Particularly exciting: the stripe patterns not only offer them protection from predators, but also help to regulate their body temperature in the hot African sun.

**Giraffes

The majestic giants are an absolute highlight in Bitterwasser. With their long necks, they reach the leaves of the acacia trees, which are particularly valuable in the barren landscape - a sight you won't soon forget.

**Ostriches**

The ostrich, the largest bird in the world, is also a common resident in Bitterwasser. With a top speed of up to 70 km/h, they are among the fastest runners in the animal world. Their watchful eyes and impressive plumage make them a favourite subject for photos.

**Springboks**

The springboks, the national animals of Namibia, are not only known for their grace, but also for their spectacular leaps. They move in large herds and can jump up to three metres high when in danger - impressive proof of their strength and speed.

**Oryx**

Oryxes, also known as gemsboks, are famous for their imposing horns and graceful demeanour. They are perfectly adapted to life in the desert and require very little water as they can draw moisture from their food.

**Kudus

Kudus, with their impressive spiral horns, are elegant antelopes that like to linger in shady areas. Their camouflaged coat with white stripes helps them to hide in the landscape. With a little patience and luck, you can spot these animals on a game drive.

Whether on the ground or from the air - the diversity and beauty of African wildlife will inspire you.

1250 km palm tree for Dmitry Borovyk and Anton Minskii

The last season 2023/24 ended with a spectacular highlight for Dmitry Borovyk and Anton Minskii: on the very last day, they managed to fly around three declared turning points that cover an impressive distance of 1250 kilometers. This extraordinary achievement earned them the privilege of planting a palm tree in Bitterwasser - an honor only bestowed on the best pilots. One year later, the two are now returning to Bitterwasser to plant their palm tree in a festive ceremony in keeping with the old Bitterwasser tradition.
