Flying till the end: Sunset in Bitterwasser

The best thermal weather over the past few days allowed for long flights until sunset. African sunsets are known worldwide for their intense colours and incomparable atmosphere - especially from the sky.

Namibia is known for its spectacular sunsets. Dust particles in the air give the evening sky its characteristic fiery red hue. In combination with the dry, clear air and the sheer endless expanse of the country, a play of colors unfolds that makes every evening an unforgettable experience.

In Bitterwasser, such magical moments can be observed regularly - whether from the ground or in the air. Landings are possible up to 15 minutes after local sunset (but not a second longer!). This period offers the perfect opportunity for spectacular shots in which the setting sun, dark clouds and the contrast of the landscape create impressive scenes.

Good News

The SSN (Soaring Society of Namibia) website states that pilots holding a SPL license together with a valid LAPL medical may fly gliders with European registration in Namibia. Previously, the more complex Class 2 ICAO medical was required. The SSN point out that no definitive, valid statement can be made for neighbouring countries such as Botswana or South Africa.

For glider owners: Please check with your insurance company that this is in accordance with your insurance contract.
